The Greenwich Giants Baseball Club made history on Saturday 7 June 2025, hosting their largest ever event with over 60 participants at their Women & Girls Baseball Festival at the University of Greenwich. Thanks to funding from the World Baseball Softball Confederation Europe and Little League International, the milestone event marked the first time so many people had gathered to play baseball in Southeast London, with women and girls making up over 50% of all participants and coaches.
The event was elevated by the presence of Laura Hirai, a current Great Britain Women’s National Team player in both baseball and softball (the Women’s Olympic format) and serves as the pitching coach for the U12 GB Baseball National Team. Laura worked with and shared her knowledge on pitching with participants across all age groups throughout the day.
The festival attracted 26 women and girls to play baseball together, many experiencing the sport for the first time. Combined with six female coaches, the event achieved a significant milestone for the club by surpassing 50% female participation across all age groups.
